LETTER – DRAW FROM IT AS YOU PLEASE
Dear
Council Member,
I am writing you today in support of the
Mayor's courageous plan to protect the environment and save
Klingle Valley Park. Over a year ago, the Mayor called for
the washed out section of
Klingle Road to be kept for runners, bikers, walkers,
and emergency vehicles.
The City has thoroughly studied
this beautiful valley, and all of the affected DC agencies
have concluded that the traffic, environmental, and financial
data do not support a paved solution. The National Park
Service, stewards of splendid Rock Creek National Park, and of
the land surrounding the road, oppose
re-paving because of the effect road construction and car
traffic would have on the ecology of Klingle Creek and Rock
Creek, as well as the bordering National Park land. The
Fire and EMS people have stated unequivocally that Klingle is
not needed as an emergency route.
Rebuilding Klingle Road for car
traffic would just be too expensive, about $4.25 million more
than the bike path option, especially at a time of such
financial hardship for DC. Instead of spending $4.25 million
for a shortcut that would benefit a lucky few, that money
could be spent on road improvements that are truly needed in
other parts of the City. Supporting such a special interest
road is unfair to the rest of DC, especially now.
I hope that you share in my
concern for the environment and finances of our great City. I
urge you to oppose the road bill, and support the Mayor's
bill.
Please keep Klingle Valley open to people, not cars.
Sincerely,
Name:
